Emergency Department Length of Stay

Akron Children's Hospital handles nearly 90,000 ER visits each year, making it one of the busiest pediatric ERs in the country. With a large ER volume, we strive hard to maintain high standards in efficiency in emergency care.

ER Length of Stay

Benchmark data not availableSince hospitals do not agree on how long a child should stay in the ER, this measure cannot be used to compare hospitals. However, we have developed our own target based on our experience.

How do we measure?

To monitor how efficiently we deliver care in the ER, we measure how long it takes from when a patient first arrives to the ER until they are discharged to home or admitted to a patient floor.

What are we doing to improve?

We use a carefully developed triage system to help expedite the care of our patients. In 2004, we launched a separate division of the ER called Fast Track that cares for children whose conditions are less emergent. Fast Track allows our staff of the main ER to focus on children who are critically ill and require more urgent care.

We also have expanded our ER services to other areas of northeast Ohio including Boardman, Hudson and Montrose.

About 85% of patients with non-urgent needs are registered, examined, treated and discharged in less than 2 hours, even during the busy summer months.
