For 120 years, Akron Children’s Hospital has enjoyed the support of a community that has helped us transform a day nursery into the largest pediatric health system in northeast Ohio. It is a bond of trust we strive to fulfill each and every day through the care we give our children and families — care that is guided by a promise to treat all children as if they were our own, to treat other people as we would want to be treated, and to turn no child away, regardless of their ability to pay.
It also means reinvesting in the communities we serve through outreach programs, such as holding summer camps for kids with chronic health concerns; educating a new generation of physicians, nurses and allied health professionals; advocating tirelessly for the health needs of children; and performing research in disease prevention that could affect children for generations to come.
In 2009, our community benefit totaled more than $75 million. In the following pages you will learn more about how we directed our efforts. This report puts a face on our community benefit through the stories and smiles of those who felt its impact. I encourage you to take a few moments to learn more about the benefits Akron Children’s is privileged to provide for the region we call home.
