(This procedure/test may also be known as: Lower GI Series, Lower Gastrointestinal Series)

Barium enema is a special x-ray of the large intestine, which includes the colon and rectum. Abnormal test results may be a sign of acute appendicitis; colitis due to Crohn's disease; diverticulitis; ulcerative colitis; Hirschsprung's disease; intestinal obstruction; and intussusception.
