Over the last five years, the reduction of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLA-BSI) has been a primary objective of Akron Children's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where critically ill children and teens are also at risk.

Led by nurse practitioner Ann-Marie Brown, MSN, CCRN, CPNP-AC/PC, and clinical nurse specialist Jean Christopher, MSN, CNS, WCC, the project was part of a National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) collaboration with other children’s hospitals throughout the U.S.

“The collaborative has been highly successful, saving hundreds of lives and tens of millions of dollars by preventing infections in pediatric and cardiac ICUs,” said Christopher.

At the start of the project in 2004, Akron Children’s PICU had a baseline CLA-BSI rate of 19.93 per 1,000 central line catheter days. By 2010, the rate had been reduced by 96.7 percent to 0.66 infections per 1,000 central line catheter days.

The results were achieved by adapting groupings of evidence-based best practices for central line insertion and maintenance from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Known as care bundles, these practices are much more effective when implemented together than individually.

“Reducing CLA-BSI is critical to improving patient safety and shortening hospital stays,” said Christopher. “Based on the success of this collaborative, we are now implementing these care bundles across the entire organization.”
