Palliative Care Fellowship

Akron Children’s Hospital offers a 1-year pediatric palliative care fellowship program.

Palliative care is devoted to achieving the best possible quality of life for patients facing a life-threatening or terminal illness and for their families, through relief of symptoms and aggressive management of other sources of suffering.

The practice of palliative medicine requires age-appropriate assessment of the patient and family and interdisciplinary care that addresses physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

Palliative care helps the patient and family face the prospect of death, assured that comfort will be a priority, values and decisions will be respected, spiritual and psychosocial needs will be addressed, practical support will be available, and opportunities for growth and closure will exist.  

The major domains of knowledge covered by palliative medicine training are:

Fellows receive training in inpatient, community (i.e., home hospice, home care or long-term care) and outpatient or ambulatory settings. Our fellows are exposed to patients with a variety of disease conditions and socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. 

Opportunities are provided to see patients with different diagnoses in inpatient and community settings. Clinical care and clinical teaching are provided in a collaborative manner with physicians and non-physicians in a team structure.

The training experience also includes a consultation model, longitudinal care of patients and families, and exposure to bereavement support.
