Meet Our Patients

Our Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery provides surgical treatment for diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nerves for infants, children, teens, and young adults. This includes a variety of procedures addressing such conditions as intractable epilepsy, brain and spine tumors, trauma involving the central nervous system, congenital brain and spine malformations, and cerebrovascular anomalies.

Our surgeons have a commitment to providing the safest and highest quality care. Akron Children’s actively supports this mission by implementing the use of advanced technology. Most recently, the hospital acquired ROSA, a robotic neurosurgical assistant. ROSA is designed to aid in minimally invasive implantation of electrodes into the brain, allowing in-depth monitoring of electrical activity in children with seizures. ROSA allows our neurosurgeons to perform procedures more quickly, and with greater accuracy.  Our patients benefit by undergoing safer, less invasive procedures, and less time under general anesthesia. Technology such as ROSA, as well as our neurosurgeons’ skill and specialized training, ensure children receive exceptional neurosurgical care.

Our commitment to children with neurosurgical needs doesn’t stop in the operating room. Neurosurgical problems in children are often quite different from those commonly seen in adults and frequently require long term care.  Children diagnosed with brain or spinal cord injuries and diseases, in additional to requiring surgery, may also experience widespread developmental effects. That's why our pediatric neurosurgeons are located within our NeuroDevelopmental Science Center. Here, our neurosurgeons share space with pediatric neurologists, pediatric epileptologists, neuropsychologists, physiatrists and developmental-behavioral pediatricians. This team centered approach provides comprehensive care tailored to the unique neurologic and developmental needs of the individual patient, all in one central location.
