Our pediatric neurologists evaluate, diagnose and treat abnormalities of the brain, spinal cord and nervous system in infants, children and teens. This includes metabolic and mitochondrial diseases, epilepsy and seizure disorders, headaches, neuromuscular disorders, neurocutaneous disorders such as neurofibromatosis, and problems due to brain injuries, stroke or brain tumors.
Our child neurologists and nurse practitioners combine the special expertise of diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system with an understanding of childhood medical disorders and the special needs of children and their families.
Many of the chronic conditions we treat require the expertise of other pediatric specialists, such as pediatric neurosurgeons, behavioral and neuropsychologists, physiatrists (rehabilitation physicians) and developmental-behavioral pediatricians.
A variety of tests and procedures may be used to obtain an accurate diagnosis, such as cerebral angiography, EEG, EMG, nerve conduction velocity testing and transcranial Doppler. Neuropsychological testing may also be used to assess cognitive development and function.
Treatment for many neurologic conditions is advancing rapidly and may include a number of therapeutic interventions in addition to medication, such as a ketogenic diet for reducing the number of seizures associated with epilepsy, or cognitive behavioral therapy and biofeedback training for managing chronic headaches.
