Akron Children’s Emergency Services department uses a carefully developed triage system to identify and direct ER patients according to the urgency of care required.
Our team is made up of pediatric board-certified doctors, nurses, technicians and child life specialists who have training in pediatric emergency medicine.
As a result, we’re familiar with the vast differences in children’s anatomy, injuries and illnesses.
Kids have different muscular, skeletal, vascular and neurological systems from adults, and they're at higher risk for head injuries and blood loss.
We also understand that even children’s symptoms are different. For instance, children can maintain normal blood pressure even when they’re in critical condition.
Upon arrival to one of Akron Children's ERs, our nurses will identify your child’s needs as emergent, urgent or non-urgent, based on symptoms and history.
About 85 percent of patients with non-urgent needs are registered, examined, treated and discharged in less than 2 hours, even during the busy summer months.
We also provide:
If your child needs stitches, we have a suture program with specially trained technicians and nurses to reduce scarring and pain from sutures.
Akron Children’s Hospital is verified as a pediatric trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. The pediatric trauma verification is based on our ability to provide quality trauma care to trauma victims and their families from the time of injury, through the acute care phase, into the rehabilitation phase.
