Akron Children's Pain Center offers inpatient and outpatient pain management services for infants, children and teens, including those recovering from surgery, undergoing painful procedures, experiencing painful medical conditions such as sickle cell disease and fibromyalgia, or healing from a painful injury.
Our pain center addresses a patient's physical, psychological and emotional well being.
A pediatric anesthesiologist serves as the medical director, and he is supported by staff from various health disciplines including nurses, nutritionists, dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists and psychologists.
Our center treats:
Patients recovering from surgery
Children undergoing painful procedures, such as bone marrow aspirations, chest tube insertions, lumbar puncture and other minor procedures
Patients with medical conditions that cause pain such as pancreatitis, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, fibromyalgia, cancer and chronic kidney disease
Patients experiencing pain as a result of trauma, a burn or a sports-related injury
What To Expect
Our center offers treatments that are complementary to traditional pain medicine, including:
Aromatherapy, which uses scents from volatile plant oils, including essential oils, to enhance psychological and physical well being. Studies have shown certain scents can reduce stress and tension, allowing patients to heal more quickly.
Massotherapy, which can promote healing by stimulating the body’s natural recuperative powers. Massage can improve blood flow to affected areas and reduce muscular fatigue, helping the body to heal faster.
Herbology, which can offer pain and stress relief through the healing compounds found in some plants. Herbs can help heal and prevent certain ailments and also can strengthen the body's natural functions.
Yoga therapy, which can improve flexibility, helping the body and mind to feel more relaxed. Yoga strengthens the muscles by using the body's own weight rather than barbells or machines, reducing the potential for further injury or strain.
Homeopathy, in which treatment attempts to stimulate the body to heal itself through minute doses of natural products derived from organic and inorganic sources.
Physical therapy, which is valuable in chronic pain treatment. Akron Children's physical therapists are trained to provide pain-related rehabilitation through various techniques directed at long-term pain relief.
Interventional pain management, in which peripheral and neuraxial nerve blocks are conducted to interrupt the chronic pain cycle.
