Are you sure your child is in the right car seat? Is it installed correctly to keep him safe? And what about all of those old and unwanted car seats and bike helmets around the house and garage?
The Safe Kids Coalition of Summit County can answer those questions and more at the free Community Car Seat Check and Recycle Safety Event on Sept. 14, 3 to 6 pm, at the Center for Child Development at the University of Akron, 108 Fir Hill Drive, in Akron.
Safe Kids, in collaboration with the University of Akron, will offer free car seat inspections, performed by certified child passenger safety technicians.
“We are making this a ‘green’ event by encouraging families to bring expired or unwanted car seats and bike helmets for recycling,” said Lisa Pardi, RN, injury prevention coordinator for Akron Children’s Hospital and director of Safe Kids Summit County. “While yard sales and flea markets offer great opportunities to buy items at bargain prices, we do not recommend parents buy car seats and bike helmets secondhand. The technology and manufacturer guidelines are always changing and you simply do not know the history of the items you are buying.”
In addition to the Sept. 14 event, Safe Kids will be collecting used car seats and bike helmets on two upcoming Fridays – Aug. 31 and Sept. 7 – at Akron Children’s Hospital's Exchange Street Building, 130 W. Exchange Street, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Please call 330-543-8942 for drop-off details.
