Akron Children’s Hospital welcomes Larry Patterson, MD, as the director of nephrology and his wife, Mary Patterson, MD, as medical director of simulation services. They come to Akron Children’s from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Dr. Larry Patterson will lead a team of board-certified pediatric nephrologists in treating children and teens with kidney and kidney-related diseases.
He has extensive experience in the research of kidney development and disease, and his areas of special interest include chronic conditions leading to kidney failure, and follow-up care for children who have high blood pressure and kidney disease as long-term effects of premature birth.
Dr. Patterson graduated from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa., and completed his pediatrics residency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. His professional training continued with fellowships in pediatric nephrology at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and in research at the Laboratory of Mammalian Genes and Development at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
In addition to overseeing simulation services at Akron Children’s, Dr. Mary Patterson will also be an attending physician in the Emergency department. She worked in the ED at Cincinnati Children’s for 14 years and has a special interest in the use of simulation in evaluating systems, medical education, staff training and improving quality and safety in health care. She serves on the board of directors and is the past president of the Society for Simulation in Health Care.
After graduating from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Dr. Patterson completed her pediatrics residency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and then completed her pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
The Pattersons reside in west Akron, Ohio.
