Akron Children's names new director of neurosurgery

Dr. Roger Hudgins

Pediatric neurosurgeon Roger Hudgins, MD, joins the medical staff at Akron Children's Hospital as division director of Neurosurgery and clinical director of the Neuroscience Center.

Dr. Hudgins comes to Akron Children's from Atlanta, where he served as chief medical officer for neurosciences and craniofacial surgery at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. He also was the chief of pediatric neurosurgery and a clinical professor in neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Dr. Hudgins completed a medical internship in general surgery and a residency in neurological surgery at the University of Florida at Gainesville. He completed his fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the University of California at San Francisco.

Dr. Hudgins will care for children and young adults who have epilepsy and other seizure disorders, brain tumors, spinal injuries, craniofacial disorders, or, who have suffered a head trauma. He will play a critical role in establishing a neuroscience center at Akron Children's and will begin a pediatric epilepsy surgery program.

Surgery is an option for children who have epilepsy that cannot be controlled by medicine. Surgery can possibly stop their seizures, get them off medication and improve their overall quality of life.

"This is an exciting time to be practicing medicine in the neurosciences," said Dr. Hudgins. "A variety of tools, techniques and treatments are in development and, in the next decade, we will have newer, more non-invasive ways of treating brain tumors. We will use MRI scans to better target tumors and will be able to place treatment particles into tumors using tiny incisions. I think this will lead to remarkable improvements in our ability to care for children who have neurological diseases."
