Pediatric cardiology added to Aultman Hospital clinics

05-12-2010

J.R. Bockoven, MD, a pediatric cardiologist from the Heart Center at Akron Children's Hospital, is now seeing patients at Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Dr. Bockoven and his clinical team will provide diagnostic procedures and follow-up care for infants, children and teens with congenital heart disease on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cardiology is the third pediatric specialty offered by Akron Children's Hospital at Aultman Hospital. The hospitals began collaborating in December 2008 with two other pediatric specialty clinics:
Two pediatric pulmonologists and a nurse practitioner for children with asthma and other respiratory problems, and

Two pediatric neurologists for children with headaches, epilepsy, seizure disorders, head injuries and other general neurology concerns.

Dr. Bockoven has been providing inpatient consultation at Aultman for the past nine months and will continue to perform inpatient cardiology consultation.

"We are pleased to bring the expertise of Akron Children's Hospital's Heart Center to Aultman and families in Stark and surrounding counties," said Meredith Slosberg, vice president for Surgical Subspecialties, the Heart Center and the Neurodevelopmental Sciences Center at Akron Children's. "Dr. Bockoven will be well equipped with EKG, echocardiography and other diagnostic tools and, of course, has the full resources of the Heart Center available to him."

According to Dr. Bockoven, advanced heart procedures, such as cardiac MRI, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies, cardiac ablations and surgery, will still be done at Akron Children’s main campus.

"But, as in the case of children requiring advanced procedures, including heart surgery, all of their follow-up care can be done closer to home at Aultman," said Dr. Bockoven.

The Heart Center at Akron Children's Hospital offers a full range of pediatric cardiology services, including the prenatal diagnosis of heart defects, treatment for heart rhythm abnormalities, interventional cardiology, and cardiovascular surgery. The center's Adult Congenital Heart Service provides continuity of care for patients with congenital heart disease throughout life.

"We are pleased to further expand Aultman's pediatric outpatient clinics," said Deanna Hatfield, RN, associate vice president of women's and children's services for Aultman Hospital. "This collaboration will help to meet the needs of our community."

Aultman Hospital is located at 2600 Sixth St., S.W, in Canton.
