Two nationally-known speakers and authors will speak at Akron Children’s Hospital Nov. 29 about the benefits children receive from attending summer camp.
The free program, called “How Summer Camp Makes Healthy Kids in Spirit, Mind and Body,” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Considine Professional Building Auditorium, 215 W. Bowery St., Akron.
The speakers are Scott Arizala and Dr. Christopher Thurber. Arizala is the chief executive officer of The Camp Counselor, a camp staff trainer and author of S’more Than Camp.
Thurber is a child psychologist and co-author of The Summer Camp Handbook. He has been a guest on The Today Show, Martha Stewart, CBS News and National Public Radio.
Arizala and Thurber will discuss research that confirms conventional wisdom: Summer camp accelerates children’s growth in self-esteem, sense of adventure, social skills and self reliance. They will combine humorous anecdotes with hard data and insightful answers to parents’ questions about choosing the right camp, preventing homesickness, and getting the most out of the summer camp experience.
The program is sponsored by Catholic Charities, the United Way of Summit County and Akron Children’s Hospital.
