Akron Children’s Hospital raises $25.2 million for campus expansion

During a campaign celebration, Akron Children’s Hospital will announce that more than $25.2 million has been raised during the leadership phase of the $60 million Building on the Promise capital campaign in support of the Akron campus’ major expansion plan and a renovated and expanded Ronald McDonald House of Akron.

“We are so excited to share this significant accomplishment with our dedicated supporters, hospital staff and community,” said Philip H. Maynard, chairman of the Building on the Promise capital campaign. “We are extremely grateful to the individuals, companies, private foundations and employees of Akron Children’s Hospital who so generously stepped forward during this initial phase of the campaign to provide philanthropic support for this milestone undertaking.”

This is the largest capital campaign undertaken on behalf of Akron Children’s Hospital. To date, the most significant contribution is from the Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital who committed $2.5 million. There have been nine other leadership donations of $1 million or more from Children’s Family Care, Inc.; Richard and Joanne Grigg; GOJO; Mary and Louis S. Myers Foundation; Northeastern Ohio McDonald’s Advertising, Inc.; Pediatrix Medical Group and three anonymous individuals. The campaign has also been widely supported by a myriad of other individuals, companies and private foundations.

Of particular note is the generosity from Akron Children’s Hospital’s employees. A campaign undertaken in 2013 generated $3.8 million, a demonstration of the commitment many employees have for the hospital.

“Every supporter, every contributor, becomes a part of our hospital, a part of our promises that we deliver day in and day out to the children and families in our community,” said Bill Considine, president and CEO of Akron Children’s Hospital.

The Building on the Promise capital campaign is chaired by Maynard, along with honorary co-chairs Virginia A. Albanese, Anthony J. Alexander and Joseph S. Kanfer.

Akron Children’s Hospital officially broke ground on the new building last May. Once complete, the medical building will house a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), emergency department, outpatient surgery center and labor and delivery unit for high-risk newborns.

To create a calm, comforting and creative atmosphere, the interior of the building will bring the outside in with a theme that channels the imaginative spirit of a child’s natural play environment – the backyard. Each department will have its own backyard theme, from puddles to tree houses, brought to life with bright colors, children’s artwork and more. The building is expected to open as early as March 2015.

In addition to the new medical building, the Ronald McDonald House of Akron will also be renovated and will expand from 20 to 60 rooms for families receiving treatment at the hospital.
