Breastfeeding: A new skill for both mom and baby

While it may take a little practice, breastfeeding is one of the most natural ways a mother can give her baby a healthy head start.

In a new Akron Children’s Hospital video, Liz Maseth, RN, IBCLC, a lactation consultant at the hospital, discusses the benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby, as well as some resources to help smooth the process.

“It is supposed to be natural,” said Maseth, who breastfed all six of her own children. “But a lot of moms, especially with their first babies, need to learn how to do it. Breastfeeding is a new skill for both mom and baby.”

Maseth discusses the health benefits of breastfeeding for both moms and babies and offers advice on holds, latches and breastpumping. She also touches on what types of food and drink moms should avoid during the breastfeeding period.

The video, part of a series of Children’s On Demand videos produced by Akron Children’s Hospital, is available in the audio-visual library at Type in the key word, "breastfeeding."
