Save a life at the Be The Match registry marrow drive

Take the first step to saving a life by joining the Be The Match Registry® at one of two drives hosted by Akron Children’s Hospital.

With just a quick cheek swab, greater Akron residents can register at the hospital’s Atrium Lobby between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Nov. 16, and residents of the Mahoning Valley can register Nov. 18 in the community room of the hospital’s Beeghly campus, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma, a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor is their best or only hope for a cure. These patients depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match, and a second chance at life.

While many patients find the life-saving match they need each year, more donors are needed to help increase the likelihood that all patients will find a match.

Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially critical, as patients in need of a transplant are most likely to match someone who shares their same race or ethnicity.

The cost to add new members to the Be The Match registry during these drives is being underwritten by the Friends of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Akron Children’s Hospital. However, donations are also being accepted.
