Leadership. High-quality care. Professional growth and development. These are just a few of the magnetic properties that draw both patients and employees to Akron Children's Hospital, and they are three of the factors the Magnet Recognition Program uses to single elite hospitals out from the crowd.

Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Magnet Recognition Program distinguishes hospitals with a commitment to nursing excellence and outstanding performance by the entire organization.

Akron Children's applied for and received Magnet recognition status in 2007 and is applying for re-designation this year. Appraisers from ANCC will visit the Akron Children's campuses in Akron and Youngstown Nov. 14-16.

"We are very proud of this achievement and the hard work and dedication of our professional nursing staff," said Lisa Aurilio, MSN, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, vice president for patient services and chief nursing officer at Akron Children's. "Our nurses demonstrate commitment to patient and family-centered care and continuously strive to practice with the highest professional nursing standards. We are proud to be among the best of the best."

Less than 7 percent of all U.S. health care organizations have received Magnet designation and only 34 are children's hospitals.

Patients, family members, staff and interested parties who would like to provide comments are encouraged to do so. Anyone may send comments via email, fax, and direct mail. All phone comments to the Magnet program office must be followed up in writing.

Comments are confidential and never shared with the facility. If you choose, your comments may be anonymous, but must be in writing. All comments must be received by Nov. 4.

The ANCC email address is magnet@ana.org and the phone number is 866-588-3301 (toll free). The fax number is 301-628-5217. The mailing address is: 8515 Georgia Ave., Suite 400, Silver Spring, MD, 20910-3492.
