Akron Children’s program recognized by American Diabetes Association

The Diabetes Community Outreach Program at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley has been renewed by the American Diabetes Association through 2018.

The Diabetes Outreach Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as meeting national standards for diabetes self-management education. As part of adherence to the high educational standards of the ADA, the program must be reviewed for renewal every four years.

“Our outpatient, school liaison interventions, and professional in-services have been recognized as excellent by the American Diabetes Association,” according to Kathleen D. Ashton, director of program integration and development for the Community Outreach, Education and Support Center, Mahoning Valley.

The program recently incorporated  a computer program that allows its team to track each participant’s data. “This software allows us to capture patient outcomes in nutrition, diabetes care, and healthy coping behaviors that have objectively proven that our efforts are making a difference in the lives of children and families.”

The Diabetes Outreach Program offers comprehensive education and support for children and adolescents, as well as their families, from the time of diagnosis. The program has been adapted by and incorporated into local school systems across the region.

The Diabetes Outreach Program is part of Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Community Outreach, Education, and Support Center. For more information, please call 330-729-1387.
