Akron area middle and high school students and their parents are invited to attend the Healthcare Career Awareness Night on Wed. Nov. 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at North High School, located at 985 Gorge Blvd., in Akron.
The event is free and open to students in grades 6 through 12 who want to explore careers in health care. It is sponsored by Healthcare in Progress, a collaboration of primary, secondary and higher education, and Akron area hospitals, aimed at encouraging students to consider careers in health care.
More than 25 exhibits and demonstrations will focus on careers in biomedical engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, sports medicine, medical research, physical, occupational and speech therapy, respiratory care, social work, and other fields.
Students can take a look inside a real ambulance and a simulation bus to see what it’s like to respond to 911 medical emergencies, perform a surgery or give CPR. Information will also be available on teen volunteer opportunities at Akron hospitals and Akron Public Schools’ career education programs.
Each student will receive a free drawstring backpack and career information kit; and will be automatically entered into a drawing for a one of the evening’s prizes. Snacks and beverages will be served.
Event sponsors – and members of Healthcare in Progress – are Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron Community Foundation, Akron General Medical Center, Summa Health System, Akron Public Schools, Austen BioInnovation Institute of Akron, ARI-AHEC, Kent State University, Northeast Ohio Medical University and the University of Akron.
