The Employee Foundation Council at Akron Children’s Hospital presented Haynes Robinson, MD, with its Distinguished Service Award for 2012.
The EFC Distinguished Service Award was established in 1979 to recognize the contributions of hospital chief executive officer Roger Sherman, and has since been awarded every year to an employee who demonstrates exemplary leadership, loyalty, dedication and service. Honorees are nominated by fellow employees and voted upon by EFC.
Dr. Robinson is the founder of the Genetics Center at Akron Children’s and co-director of the Fetal Treatment Center.
After he completed medical school at Ohio State University in 1962, Dr. Robinson was intrigued by the fields of pediatrics, pathology and the emerging field of genetics. He was an early advocate for prenatal tests such as amniocentesis, and newborn screening.
He completed his training in pediatrics and pathology at Akron Children’s, Buffalo Children’s Hospital, and Roswell Park Memorial Institute in New York before joining Akron Children’s medical staff in 1971 as an associate pathologist.
He considers his greatest accomplishment the creation of Akron Children’s Fetal Treatment Center, with neonatologist Dr. Gary Benfield and genetic counselor Melonie Michelson. The center provides support, care coordination and a multi-disciplinary team approach when parents learn their unborn child has a genetic condition or may have a high-risk birth.
“We bring everyone together, offer a treatment plan for the birth and beyond, and can offer parents hope and reassurance,” said Dr. Robinson.
He is also very hopeful about the future role of genetics in medicine.
“Right now we are just beginning to understand disease and the disease process on a molecular level,” he said. “In the future, I think we will learn how to intervene and alter the course of a disease. I don’t think we will ever understand everything but we will understand a lot more.”
