Gregory Benson, MD, has been named medical director of Akron Children’s Hospital’s new Outpatient Surgical Center, which will open May 5, 2015. The center will be on the third floor of the $180 million Kay Jewelers Pavilion.
The center, featuring four operating rooms, will primarily be used for ENT, ophthalmology, urology, dental and plastic surgery cases.
Designed using the operations efficiency principles of Lean Six Sigma, the new Outpatient Surgery Center has been carefully planned with the safety, comfort and convenience of the patient experience in mind.
Dr. Benson previously served as medical director of the Dental Surgery Center and co-director of the Pediatric Ambulatory Anesthesia Services at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. He was also an attending anesthesiologist.
“I am honored to be part of the leadership team responsible for the opening of the first free-standing, dedicated pediatric outpatient surgery center in Northeast Ohio,” said Dr. Benson. “This is quite an exciting time to be part of the Akron Children’s family and I look forward to serving our patients and families with this amazing facility and staff.”
Dr. Benson, a native of Poland, Ohio, earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Ohio State University Hospitals and his fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
