Bernett L. Williams has announced her resignation as president and CEO of the Akron Urban League, effective Jan. 28, 2011, to accept a new position as vice president of external affairs for Akron Children's Hospital.
The Akron Urban League Board of Directors is forming a search committee, which will oversee the selection of a new CEO. The committee will include representatives from the National Urban League.
Williams expressed appreciation to the Akron Urban League for 14 great years.
"My time at the Akron Urban League has always felt more like a ministry than a job. The spirit and resilience of the people we serve at the Akron Urban League make it easy to remain focused on the mission...to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Summit County, particularly African-Americans, through economic self-reliance and social empowerment. I am most thankful for the opportunity to have served as president and CEO of this wonderful institution," Williams wrote in her letter to the Urban League board.
In her new position at Akron Children's, Williams will develop, coordinate and lead relations with community and business leaders and groups. She will oversee community partnerships, programs and collaborations to ensure they further the hospital's mission and objectives and will assist in developing strategies to better serve the hospital's diverse patient populations.
She will also oversee the hospital's government relations initiatives and community benefit reporting.
"Bernett Williams has an outstanding record of accomplishment with the Akron Urban League, and Akron Children's Hospital is fortunate to have her join our team," said William Considine, president and CEO of Akron Children's Hospital. "Her leadership and involvement in the community will be of great value as Akron Children's continues its long-standing mission of caring for the children and families of Northeast Ohio."
"We congratulate Bernett Williams on her new position with Akron Children's Hospital," said Robert Harrigan, chair of the Akron Urban League Board of Directors.
"We know that she will do an excellent job as she has done for past 14 years with the Akron Urban League. We will certainly miss her at the Akron Urban League, where she has done an amazing job of ensuring that the Akron Urban League remains a jewel in the Greater Akron Community helping so many people over the years and making the Akron community better for all. Her most amazing achievement was the fulfilling of her dream to construct a new building for the Akron Urban League which, due to her hard work and leadership, she accomplished a few years ago. We wish her good luck in her new role."
The Akron Urban League has seen many major accomplishments under Williams' leadership over the past 14 years, including:
Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, states, "Bernett Williams impressed me, from the moment I met her, as a savvy, talented leader. She has lifted the Akron Urban League to a level of impressive performance and community service. We congratulate her on 14 years of service, and will always consider her an Urban Leaguer."
