Akron Children’s adds general pediatric surgery to list of services now offered at Beeghly campus

General pediatric surgery added in Mahoning Valley

Dr. Elena Rossi

Beginning in August, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will add general pediatric surgery to its list of surgical services offered at the Kikel Center for Pediatric Surgery located on its Beeghly campus in Boardman.

“We’re pleased to expand our list of surgical services to better meet the needs of children and families in the Mahoning Valley,” said Elena Rossi, MD, associate chair of pediatrics and neonatologist at Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley. “This will allow non-urgent surgical procedures to be performed locally. Previously, families needed to travel outside the area for these procedures; now, they can receive them, here, in their own community.”

Oliver Soldes, MD, from Akron Children's Pediatric Surgery Center will perform the procedures.

“Dr. Soldes is a part of a surgical team that includes pediatric anesthesiologists and specialty nurses who understand the unique medical needs and concerns of children and their families," said John Babyak, MD, medical director of surgical services at Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley. "Our team knows how children are medically different and having specialized training with equipment and techniques suited to a child helps ensure the best outcome for the patient.”

The Kikel Center for Pediatric Surgery is the Valley’s only dedicated pediatric surgery center. Surgical services are provided for newborns, children and teens. Other elective procedures offered at the center include dental; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; ophthalmology; orthopedic; reconstructive/plastic; and urology.
