Akron Childrenís Hospitalís Harness Race Rally celebrates 50 years

Annual fundraiser to be held Aug. 12 at Northfield Park

Though much has changed since the first Harness Race Rally to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital was held in 1962, one thing has remained the same, the ticket price. Raffle tickets are still just $1 each.

The 50th annual Harness Race Rally, which is presented by the Friends of Akron Children’s Hospital, a dedicated fundraising group, will be held on Aug. 12 at Northfield Park.

Since early May, tickets have been for sale throughout Summit County to win the grand prize: a Volkswagen Jetta, donated by Dave Walters BMW Volkswagen. The raffle winner for the car and six other prizes will be drawn during the race that evening.

All proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets will benefit Rehabilitative Services at Akron Children’s. Each day, nearly 300 children receive physical, occupational, speech and other therapies at the hospital.

“It’s our aim to raise $100,000,” said Rosemarie George, event founder and this year’s chairperson. “That’s a long way from the little more than $5,000 we raised our first year. I’ve been with the race for 50 hard-working years, and it’s been rewarding to see how the event has benefitted Akron Children’s patients.”

A special Golden Gala, held on Aug. 10 at Portage Country Club, will recognize event sponsors and past chairpersons.

50 years of generosity
The first Harness Race Rally in 1962 raised money for air conditioning and heart monitors in the emergency room. Other areas that have benefited from the Harness Race ticket sales have included the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute, the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center and many other departments throughout Akron Children’s. More than $3 million has been raised for patient care programs and equipment through the Harness Race Rally since it began.
