Letter from Palliative Care Community Advisory Board Chair

I first heard Dr. Friebert outline the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center’s “Palette of Care” approach to healing at a Women’s Board meeting in 2007.

The concept of having a team of professionals helping families navigate life while in the midst of the chaos of a child’s critical illness resonated with me. It seemed a “right” and logical design for healing.

When I was given the opportunity to join the Community Advisory Board for the Palliative Care Center, I jumped at the chance. Every year that I am a member of the Advisory Board, I gain a deeper appreciation for the staff and the good work they do for the ever-growing number of families.

I understand more clearly that their work is NOT nine to five. It is NOT confined to the walls of the hospital, and it does NOT just involve appointments with doctors and nurses.

I understand more fully that the “Palette of Care” team members ARE advocates, they ARE counselors, they ARE teachers, they ARE the voice of reason, they ARE a shoulder to cry on, and oftentimes, they ARE friends.

Those of us on the Community Advisory Board hope that our involvement and commitment can continue to grow as the center’s outreach continues to increase. It is our mission to look for ways and means of helping the center enrich and enhance the lives of those families who are served by it.

I, like many other volunteers and donors, support the center because it is a privilege to work for and with this dedicated group of skilled professionals. The team’s dedication to their patients and families inspires me. It is my hope that their work will inspire others too, so that their boundless work can thrive and stay on pace with the increasing number of families who will benefit from the caregivers of the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center.
