Infectious Disease Laboratories:Microbiology
CSF, Blood or Urine
Specimen container or Red top (no anticoagulant) tube
0.5 mL CSF / 1.0 mL serum / 5.0 mL urine
Cause for rejection:
Serum with excessive hemolysis or lipemia may not be suitable for testing.
Antigen detection by latex agglutination
Deliver to laboratory immediately. Urine specimens must be concentrated before testing and therefore are processed 0800-1600, and require a turnaround time of 2 hours. The N. meningitidis group B and E. coli K1 antigens will crossreact with the latex reagent. A positive latex result may indicate infection with either organism.
