During Handel’s second annual “Koins for Kids” campaign, local schools engaged in a friendly competition to raise funds for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.
“It’s our intent to help educate area children on the importance of helping those who are less fortunate, especially when those who are affected are their peers,” said Jim Brown, Handel’s chief operating officer.
From Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, 2010, schools in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties personalized paper snowman ornaments to raise money for the services and programs offered by the hospital to help local children and families.
Handel’s also introduced a new ice cream flavor called “White Christmas,” and a portion of the proceeds from each sale of the new flavor went toward the overall campaign.
By the end, the philanthropic students raised $30,000, and the school that raised the most money in each county received an ice cream social and a DJ for a school dance.
In addition to Handel’s, other event sponsors included Farmer’s National Bank, WBBG-FM, 570 WKBN, WKBN-TV 27 and Fox Youngstown.
