Institutional Review Board

IRB

Akron Children's Institutional Review Board (IRB) is constituted to review and approve all human subject-related research by or under the direction of Akron Children's employees, agents or members of the medical staff in connection with their institutional responsibilities.

The IRB is responsible for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects in research as set forth in the Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research (Belmont Report) and the Code of Federal Regulations (45 CFR 46 and 21 CFR 56), and for assuring compliance with federal, state and local laws as they may relate to the participation of human subjects in research.

The IRB functions under a Federal wide Assurance and is registered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP). Akron Children’s IRB has partnered with the Western IRB  as the preferred Central IRB. It is also a member of the SMART IRB reliance network.
