Cash Dash for Cancer to be held Aug. 23-25

Akron Children’s Hospital will host its first-ever online fundraising campaign, Cash Dash for Cancer, to support cancer research at the hospital. The event will take place Aug. 23 – 25, and the Showers Family Foundation will match every dollar donated online by the public at

“Progress has been made in the quest to cure childhood cancer over the past four decades. During that period of time the long-term cure rate for childhood cancer has increased from less than 10 percent to approximately 80 percent,” said Jeffrey Hord, MD,director of the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.

However, losing one out of every five children diagnosed with cancer is far too great of a loss,” Hord added. “We continue work to reach a day when all children with cancer will be cured.”

The Showers family became involved with Akron Children’s after David and Martha Shower’s grandson was treated in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a newborn. Because of the wonderful care he received; the family made a lifetime commitment to support the hospital and join the fight against childhood cancer.

In 2002, David and Martha Showers gave $3 million to help build the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders and to fund its patient care, research and education programs. The center ranks in the top one-third of pediatric cancer centers in the U.S. based upon the number of new cancer cases treated each year and has been recognized by US News and World Report and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
