Meet Our Patients

Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center - Overview

Akron Children’s Hemostasis and Thrombosis Center cares for children, adolescents and young adults with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding or clotting disorders, including the largest population of hemophilia B patients in the world.

Our staff also participates in the activities of the National Hemophilia Foundation to help provide the most up-to-date treatment to patients. Clinics are held at our Akron campus and Beeghly campus in Boardman. A satellite clinic in Millersburg serves the hemophilia patients within the Amish community.

The center is staffed by board-certified hematologists (doctors with special training in blood disorders) and social workers, as well as a nurse practitioner, nurse clinician, nurse educator, orthopedist, physical therapist and dietitian.

Our center is recognized by the Federal Department of Maternal and Child Health as a regional comprehensive hemophilia treatment center. It is supported in part by funds from the Department of Maternal and Child Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Factor Distribution Program – As a non-profit organization receiving federal awards for hemophilia care, Children’s purchases factor concentrates at the lowest cost available and then passes the savings on to patients. Children’s Factor Distribution Program offers home delivery of all brands of factor concentrates, supplies and other medications used to treat bleeding disorders.

Young Women’s Bleeding Disorder Clinic – Akron Children’s Young Women’s Bleeding Disorder Clinic offers diagnosis and treatment for excessive menstrual bleeding. Our team includes specialists in adolescent medicine and hematology, who work together to determine if excessive bleeding is caused by regular, heavy periods or a bleeding or platelet disorder.

We also provide counseling, teaching services and support groups for patients and parents. We are available to visit your schools to acquaint teachers with the special needs of students with inherited blood disorders.
