Healthy Kids Coalition

The Mahoning Valley Healthy Kids Coalition aims to combat the childhood obesity epidemic by educating parents and children about the importance of health and wellness. It is funded through a grant from the William Swanston Charitable Fund, a supporting organization of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.

Fitness and Health Education Initiatives:

The Fitness Lifestyle Challenge is a free 6-week fitness program for students ages 7-15 that was created by Akron Children’s Sports Medicine Center. It consists of fun, non-competitive games and physical activity designed to teach the importance of physical activity and nutrition. This program requires a registration form. Held at area YMCAs and community centers, it also includes a parent nutrition session, presented by a nutritionist.

The Fitness Coach program is designed for children with at-risk health concerns to improve overall wellness in order to promote long-term healthy lifestyle changes.  It includes an individualized assessment of physical activity and nutritional needs, personal short-term and long-term goal setting, positive lifestyle changes, and recurring interaction, encouragement, and motivation. This free program requires a registration form, and age is pending individual assessment.

Fitness Club is a free monthly fitness program for students ages 7-18 that involves peer physical activity, education, and motivation in a  non-judgmental group setting. It promotes healthy habits,  helps increase awareness of an active lifestyle and a balanced nutritious selection of food, and encourages the group to actively participate as a team. This program requires a registration form. Held at area YMCAs and community centers, it also includes periodic nutrition sessions, presented by a nutritionist.

The Eat Right and MOVE! program is a 6-week nutrition and activity challenge that takes place at area schools during the 2016-17 school year. It consists of a walking challenge, nutrition education, incentives for the students, and a parent/child session that includes activities and a health education presentation about the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating.
