In 2009, the Haslinger family generously pledged to continue their support of the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center. The Haslinger family chose to support the endowed chair in Pediatric Palliative Care through a matching grant.
A challenge was issued to raise $200,000 annually for five years, with each dollar matched by the Haslingers, up to $1 million. Thus far we have raised $650,000, which completed the match through 2011, bringing our grand total raised to $1.2 million.
The chair was officially established on January 26, 2011. As the founder and medical director of the Akron Children’s Hospital Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center, Sarah Friebert, MD, is the first chair holder and the chair was named in her honor.
At Akron Children’s Hospital, endowed chairs support the advancement of patient care, research and education programs. Established through a philanthropic commitment, an endowed chair provides an annual source of income to enable the chair holder, Dr. Sarah Friebert, to pursue innovative programs and efforts.
The Sarah Elizabeth Friebert, MD, Leadership Chair in Pediatric Palliative Care is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States.
