Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Akron General Medical Center was established in 2002, as a result of a partnership between Akron Children's Hospital and Akron General. The 15-bed NICU takes care of newborns with developmental problems such as immature lungs, central nervous system disorders, low birth weight and birth defects. Babies requiring subspecialty intensive services such as open-heart surgery are transported to Akron Children's Hospital.
