The 2-story Women's Board of Akron Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit features 75 private rooms, including 6 rooms to accommodate twins. Each room has a private bathroom, locked cabinets for storage, flat screen TV, reclining chair and sleep sofa for 1 parent to stay overnight.
The NICU also houses the Myers Family Lactation Center, where staff maintains safe storage, identification and retrieval of breast milk, as well as prepares individual feedings for babies.
Many premature babies need a feeding tube until they learn to eat by mouth. Our lactation consultants and registered dietitians help keep mother's milk supply plentiful and ready when baby needs it.
Our milk lab also has various fortifiers available to meet the individual nutrient needs of the baby. In the event mother's milk isn't available, donor breast milk or specialized formulas can be provided for nutritional support.
Our NICU also offers a family waiting area where siblings can play and adults can unwind; a family lounge for consultation or quiet eating; and a coin laundry.
