Anesthesiology - Overview

Akron Children’s pediatric anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists provide anesthesia and pain management services to tens of thousands of young patients each year.

When it comes to anesthesiology, they understand the major differences in children’s body structures and functions, particularly infants.

Studies show that anesthesia is safer for children — particularly very young children — when administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist.

Pediatric anesthesiologists are better at understanding the needs of each child and parent and at helping a child go to sleep with as little anesthesia as possible. They're also better at waking children up after a surgery or procedure.

What To Expect

From the start of your child’s surgery until it's completed, our team monitors your child’s heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and oxygen and anesthesia levels to understand how your child is tolerating the procedure.

Special equipment and techniques suited to the size of your child help assure a successful outcome to the surgery and anesthesia.

Resident physicians training in anesthesia and student nurse anesthetists in their second year of training also work in the operating room. However, all anesthesia is administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist or under his direct supervision.

Our team also provides anesthesia services throughout the hospital, including in radiology, in the intensive care units and on patient care units.
