Overview

Craniofacial Clinic - Overview

The Akron Children’s Craniofacial Clinic diagnoses and treats infants, children and teens with deformities in the skull and face, such as clefts and craniofacial abnormalities. The center includes medical specialists with extensive training and experience in the treatment of cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial abnormalities, and has been certified by the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association (ACPA) as an approved center. More than 500 patients – ranging from newborns to young adults – are treated in the Craniofacial Center each year.

The center’s multidisciplinary team addresses each patient’s physical and psychosocial needs through childhood and adolescence. Interventions are carefully timed as part of an individualized treatment plan to restore appearance and function as quickly and effectively as possible.

Children should be referred as soon as an abnormality is detected. Early intervention reduces stress and anxiety for the family, and minimizes future health problems relate to the craniofacial disorder.

Family support services

The Craniofacial Center team cares for the entire family, as well as the patient. The center has a Cleft Palate Family Network support group offering education programs, information and guidance, while sponsoring an annual holiday party, picnic and fundraisers. These activities bring families together to share experiences, provide reassurance and help cope with their child’s condition.

The craniofacial coordinator also helps families access various resources, including financial assistance through the Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH), as well as programs and services in their local communities.

What To Expect

Akron Children's Craniofacial Clinic meets every Friday, and children usually can see all the necessary specialists in one visit. During the initial assessment, children receive a diagnostic evaluation, which may include X-rays and dental, behavioral, and speech, language and hearing evaluations. If necessary, other diagnostic tests will be coordinated with the treatment plan.

The multidisciplinary team will then review test results, make a diagnosis and develop a comprehensive treatment plan, which will be shared with the family and the referring physician. Surgical repairs/reconstruction and medical interventions are carefully timed as part of the individualized treatment plan. As the child matures throughout treatment, the team will continue to update his or her progress on appearance, medical/dental plans, growth and development, speech language and hearing.
