Charity Ball and Presentation of the Debutantes

Charity Ball

Presented each December by the Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital, the Charity Ball has become an Akron tradition.

The first Mary Day Nursery Ball, held on Dec. 18, 1895, was a gala to raise money for the nursery and kindergarten. The Mary Day Nursery, the predecessor of Akron Children’s Hospital, had been established in 1890. The third ball, in 1897, was called the “Charity Ball” and has remained a community tradition, except for an eight-year hiatus in the early years. The Charity Ball continued through both World Wars, and 1951, the presentation of the debutantes, was added.

The 111th Charity Ball will be held on Dec. 28, 2013 at its new location, E.J. Thomas Hall. Twenty-four young women have accepted invitations to participate in the 63rd presentation of debutantes. All proceeds from the Charity Ball will benefit Akron Children’s Hospital. The 2013 Charity Ball is chaired by Cyndy Myer.
