Modes of Transportation

Air Bear®

Ohio’s first pediatric-dedicated helicopter is housed at Akron Children’s Hospital. We can reach critically ill infants, children, teens and pediatric burn patients during medical emergencies at regional and community hospitals throughout northeast Ohio. Air Bear® is operated by Med-Trans Corp. of Dallas, Texas, and each flight includes a Med-Trans pilot, as well as a dedicated transport nurse, respiratory therapist and medic from Akron Children’s Critical Care Transport team. In most cases, Air Bear® has room for one parent to travel with a child.

Mobile Intensive Care Unit

Akron Children’s also owns and operates four mobile intensive care ground units. We are prepared with invasive and non-invasive cardiorespiratory monitoring, neonatal and pediatric ventilators, oxygen, heliox and nitric oxide therapy for neonatal patients, defibrillators, cervical spine immobilization equipment and chest drainage systems. During transport, patients are closely monitored and receive the same high quality care that is offered at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Fixed Wing

Our fixed wing service eliminates geographic boundaries for access to Akron Children’s care. For patient transports of greater distances Akron Children’s Hospital uses a dedicated medically configured cabin pressurized fixed wing jet. This jet is capable of flying anywhere within the continental US, Mexico, and Canada. We use the same crew and sophisticated equipment used in the helicopter service.
