Transposition of the great arteries occurs when the pulmonary artery and aorta are switched so the aorta arises from the right side of the heart and receives blue blood, which is sent back out to the body without becoming oxygen-rich. The pulmonary artery arises from the left side of the heart, receives red blood and sends it back to the lungs again.
