The plantar fascia, or arch tendon, is a thick band of connective tissue at the bottom of the foot. It connects the heel bone to the front of the foot. If the plantar fascia becomes irritated and painful due to overuse, it's known as plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis can sometimes be mistaken for heel spurs, which is a different kind of injury with similar symptoms.
