Mitral valve prolapse is a very common heart condition. It occurs when one of the heart's valves doesn't work properly. As a result, when the heart pumps, the mitral valve flaps don't close smoothly and may not seal tightly. Instead, they may collapse backward into the left atrium. This sometimes causes regurgitation.
