Choosing unique paths to healing

“I took a different path than most doctors,” said Amy Senk, MD. “I wanted to be a pediatrician since I was a kid.”

In medical school, however, she was drawn to emergency medicine procedures. Since pediatric ER patients need fewer procedures than adults, she opted for an ER residency at Summa.

Two years into that four-year program, her passion for pediatrics led her back to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she finished her residency as a hospitalist, a doctor who specializes in managing the care of hospitalized patients.

Working at Children’s in the Mahoning Valley, Dr. Senk puts her dual training to unique use.

“I help out the pediatric-trained ER physician in the summer when the ER’s busy and I do more inpatient work in the winter when the floors are busy,” she said.

Maria Ramundo, MD, director of Akron Children's pediatric residency program, believes that collaborative approach elevates our training.

“Our culture is friendly and respectful of every resident’s career decision,” Dr. Ramundo said. “Family medicine is just as important here as specialties. In fact, our Resident Education in Community Sites program sends residents into the community to work in pediatricians’ offices for real-world experience.”

The real world is even wider here. “All our interns do four weeks of community medicine,” said Dr. Ramundo. “At Locust Pediatrics and the Access Shelter clinic, they’re exposed to impoverished families’ special needs, including legal aid and child protective services.”

Akron Children's global health program sends residents even farther, to places like Haiti and Kenya, to hone their diagnostic skills.

“It’s proven that physicians exposed to global health are more likely to come back and practice in underserved communities here,” said Dr. Ramundo.
