Overview

Childhood Obesity Program - Overview

Akron Children's Future Fitness Clinic is a successful weight management program for obese children and teens. It encourages gradual, safe weight loss by helping participants develop the knowledge and habits needed to maintain good health.

Our team of trained weight loss experts includes the medical director, who is a sports medicine physician, as well as a nurse practitioner, registered pediatric dietitian, child psychologist and youth fitness specialist/exercise physiologist.

As a child’s health improves, the entire family may benefit from diet and activity changes. Self-esteem will improve as eating and exercise habits increase endurance and decrease body fat.

Other complications of obesity, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and joint pain, may also diminish.

Akron Children's also offers Future Fitness Clubs to promote fitness and nutrition in a low-cost, community-based setting.

What To Expect

First visit

Participants receive a medical exam and exercise tolerance evaluation by a sports medicine nurse practitioner or physician.

Follow-up visits

Participants meet with the registered pediatric dietitian and youth fitness specialist/exercise physiologist each month to create and review successes and individualized goals. Monthly visits are required until the child is maintaining a healthy weight.

Psychologist visit

Each patient is recommended for evaluation by a child psychologist who specializes in body image and self-esteem. Our psychologist can address concerns that may be a barrier to success.

Insurance coverage

Insurance companies that offer preventive or well services may cover all or part of the program as a treatment for obesity or weight-related issues such as asthma, diabetes, elevated insulin, cardiac disorders and sleep apnea. Contact us and your insurance company regarding specific coverage.
