Autism Spectrum Disorder Services - Overview

Specialists in Akron Children's NeuroDevelopmental Science Center collaborate with providers in genetics, sleep medicine, gastroenterology, pediatric psychiatry and psychology, and rehabilitative services to offer care for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Our team also works closely with community partners to support the needs of these children and their families.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Symptoms

Most parents suspect that something is wrong by the time the child is 18 months old, and seek help by the time the child is age 2. Children with autism spectrum disorders typically have difficulties in:

  • Pretend play
  • Social interactions
  • Verbal and nonverbal communication

Children with autism spectrum disorders also often have intense interests and display repetitive behaviors.

Some children with autism spectrum disorders appear normal before age 1 or 2 and then suddenly regress and lose language or social skills they had previously gained. This is called the regressive type of this condition.

What To Expect

Our intake coordinator works closely with families to ensure you are linked with your local Help Me Grow early intervention team (children younger than 3) or school district (children older than 3).

Help Me Grow or the schools provide a thorough evaluation of a child’s development and learning at no charge in the local community. Based on the evaluation, an intervention plan can begin before an official diagnosis is made.

Once our center receives the complete evaluation, we will schedule an appointment for a medical evaluation.

At your child’s appointment, an Akron Children’s developmental-behavioral pediatrician will:

  • review the results of the Help Me Grow or school evaluation
  • review your child’s medical history
  • observe your child in play
  • perform a physical and neurological exam

Once a diagnosis is made, our team will work with you to identify community resources to support your child’s educational needs, and make plans for medical follow-up.

Behavioral support services are available in our center using the Stepping Stones Triple P - Positive Parenting Program® model. This approach helps parents understand the cause for their child’s behavior problems, gives ideas for promoting more desirable behavior, and offers strategies for managing difficult behavior.
