Audiology - Overview

Depending on the age and developmental level of the patient, as well as the scope of information requested, Akron Children's audiology staff may offer several options:

  • Behavioral audiometry, both in sound field and using insert or traditional earphones. This option includes behavioral observation audiometry, visual reinforcement audiometry and play audiometry.

  • Basic audiological evaluation, including air/bone conduction, speech reception threshold and speech discrimination testing

  • Impedence audiometry, which determines the functioning of the middle ear

  • Otoacoustic emission testing

  • Central auditory processing assessment

  • Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response (BSER) audiometry, screening and diagnostic. Conscious sedation is used during this test for children older than 4 months of age.

  • Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) audiometry. Conscious sedation is used during this test for children older than 4 months of age.

Akron Children's audiology department is fully integrated into the hospital and provides special services for the Down syndrome program, cystic fibrosis center and cancer survivorship program.
