Allison and Mark Vistein are the parents of twin sons, Alex and Aiden, who were born prematurely. Unfortunately, one of the babies, Alex, died when he was only six days old. Allison and Mark, along with Aiden and their older son, Caleb, made the initial gift for the playground with funds received from family and friends given in memory of baby Alex. The Visteins wanted to give back to the hospital and provide a space for children to play and have fun.
Alex’s Playground further enhances the child-friendly atmosphere on the Akron Children’s Beeghly Campus in Boardman and provides an outdoor place for our patients and their siblings to play. It will be used by patients in the inpatient areas as well as those coming to the campus for outpatient services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, and primary pediatric care appointments. Designed to accommodate children with wheelchairs, leg braces, crutches and other barriers that usually leave them sidelined at a traditional playground, the new play area also will feature sound and visual stimulation for children with hearing or vision loss.
