At the annual “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon, the main lobby of Akron Children’s Hospital was packed with hundreds of volunteers, buckets of change, and patients who shared their stories of hope and healing.
“People are proud of our hospital, and this is their way to say ‘thanks,’” said Nicci Avalon, Children’s Miracle Network program manager at Akron Children’s.
The event kicked off with the Change Bandit Bash on Feb. 10 at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls, where more than 300 Change Bandits brought in their collected cash. The next day, the phone lines opened as Keith Kennedy and Jenn Ryan broadcast the radiothon live over the airwaves of 98.1 WKDD-FM.
By the end of the three-day event, the Akron community raised $483,339 for Akron Children’s Hospital. Since 2000, the “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon has raised nearly $7 million for the patient care, education and research efforts at Akron Children’s Hospital.
“We live in a unique area, where our community just rallies around this event,” said Avalon.
The 2011 “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon was sponsored by FedEx Custom Critical and Klaben Auto Stores. The Change Bandits were sponsored in part by Charles Schwab.
