To maintain optimal protection from the flu, Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics (ACHP) is recommending that children older than 6 months receive an influenza vaccination this fall.
“Flu is more dangerous than the common cold for children,” says Jillian Miller, a pediatrician at ACHP Hudson, which is offering several vaccination clinics in October for established patients.
“Children younger than 5 – but especially children younger than 2 – are at higher risk for complications from influenza,” she said. “Children commonly need medical care because of influenza, especially before they turn 5 years old.”
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of influenza complications.
“A flu vaccination each fall is excellent protection, and it lasts for about a year,” Dr. Miller said. “We recommend getting it as soon as it’s available, because it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide protection against the virus.”
Influenza season can begin as early as October and is unpredictable, the CDC reports.
ACHP Hudson office is offering both types of flu vaccines: shot and nasal mist.
Clinic hours vary but are typically 9-11:30 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 3, 4, 7, 17-20 and 24. Call ACHP Hudson at 330-342-5555 for details and to make an appointment. Be sure to specify which vaccination method is preferred for your child.
Dr. Miller would also like parents to be aware of special considerations for some children, as advised by the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics:
ACHP Hudson is located at 1365 Corporate Drive, Suite A, in Hudson and is accepting new patients. In addition to Dr. Miller, pediatricians include: John Astrino, MD, FAAP; Patricia Hord, MD, FAAP; Jeffrey McRaven, MD; and Rosalind Robertson, MD.
