At Akron Children’s Hospital, we’re defined by the connections we make between our patients, providers and partners. Our Community Benefit t Report tells the story of these caring relationships and the programs, services, education and research we bring to the children, families and communities of northeast Ohio.
In this report, you’ll learn about the human connections that happen between our patients, families and staff, even when we don’t speak the same language. You’ll read about the connections our teaching physicians make with the medical students, residents and fellows who come to us with their aspirations to be pediatric providers.
You’ll see an example of how we connect ailing children with the special doctors and medications they need to survive, while providing the education, support and services their families need to thrive.
And, you’ll witness the exciting connections that happen when a research scientist, a plastic surgeon and a little boy born without an ear come together to find a better way to treat congenital birth defects in the future.
In 2011, we invested $85.5 million in our community benefit programs and services, an 18 percent increase over last year, largely due to the increased costs to provide care to Medicaid patients and patient families who are unable to pay for all or part of their care. We’re proud of our commitment to never turn a child away, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
We’re also deeply grateful for the continued and generous support of our donors, communities and others, because it’s through their benevolence that we are able to fulfill this important aspect of our mission.
I am reminded every day of the impact of the programs and services we offer and the connection they make between our past, present and future. Akron Children’s was founded as a day nursery in 1890 in response to an identified community need.
We’ve continued to grow over the years, adding facilities, medical staff and services to meet the needs of a growing region. Today, we are just as committed to providing the types of pediatric care, social services and health and wellness programs most needed by the children and families in northeast Ohio. I’m grateful for your support as we strive together to build a safe and healthy future for the benefit of our children, families and communities.
